Suddenly, it would seem that the Fates had answered Imogene’s call. The earth began to rumble as if it were thinking about splitting open. However, the noise was not coming from beneath her feet; it was coming from the ruin. Startled, Imogene jerked her head to look over her shoulder. As she watched in alarm, the floor to the great hall collapsed into the cellar below in a cascade of stone and dust.

Jumping up, they backed away from the huge cloud of debris until they could go no further. The moat was at their backs. And then the rumbling stopped—except for the occasional skitter and plop of an errant rock dropping into the newly formed hole visible through the arched doorways. 

Imogene waved the dust out of her eyes, coughing in the thick air.

“Oh dear, that is most unfortunate,” Mr. Benjamin said with more tragedy in his tone than his words implied.

Even Emily looked upset.

Imogene shook her head in dismay. As the dust and dirt began to settle, it became apparent that the floor was not all that had been damaged in the collapse. The front wall of the great hall was leaning in at a worrisome angle. “We might lose the entire face as well,” Imogene said in a whisper of melancholy. The castle was her favorite sketching subject. More than half of her paintings featured the castle in some capacity… and now it… “Well, it’s not gone,” she said with conviction. “The tower still stands and with bracing, I imagine we can secure the wall.” She looked over to Mr. Benjamin. He seemed to know about these things. “Would you agree?”

“Most certainly. It is still a beautiful structure—worthy of praise and study.”

Imogene nodded and turned back to stare at the mess. “The lower floor will have to be dug out.”

“Yes, but as you can see the stairs are still intact. Once the debris around is cleared out— Miss Chively? Is something wrong? Why—Miss Chively, stop! The wall might give way. Where are you go—?”

Imogene ran toward the ruined ruins, her heart hammering. She couldn’t breath, so acute was her fear. “Jasper,” she screamed. “Jasper! Come Jasper!”

She listened. 

And in the silence she heard a terrible sound. A whimper. Coming from under the collapsed floor.

Interview & #Giveaway: The Window by Amelia Brunskill

Amelia Brunskill was born in Melbourne, Australia, but she grew up mostly in Washington state where she picked a lot of blackberries, read a lot of books, and failed to properly appreciate the epic beauty of the mountains and the Pacific ocean. 

She earned her bachelors degrees in psychology and art from the University of Washington and her master in information studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She now lives in Chicago, where she eats as much Thai food as possible and works as a librarian. 

The Window is her debut novel.

Tell us something fun about you?
For a little while, I had an Etsy shop where I sold ceramic animals that I’d made. Unfortunately, they were extremely heavy so I ended up having to charge almost as much for shipping as for the items themselves!

What do you feel is the most important aspect of story development for you?
Good pacing and well-developed characters are the most important aspects of story development for me. Without good pacing, mysteries just don’t work right, but, as a reader, if characters aren’t well-developed then I simply won’t care what happens to them, good or bad.

What books have most influenced your life most?
Cynthia Voigt’s Izzy, Willy-Nilly and The Runner both really stuck with me. How the main characters responded to, and processed, the events in their lives continues to influence how I try to advocate for both myself and others. 

How much of your time do you spend on research?
While, as a librarian, I love helping other people conduct their research, I actually don’t really enjoy doing it on my own behalf—for some reason the second I switch from causally reading for interest to doing directed research, I get a little twitchy. So I do some research, but not a ton—I’m definitely not someone who is at any risk of spending more time researching than writing!

How much input do you have in the cover art process?
Random House has a questionnaire on cover design that it gives its authors, so I filled that out, and I also made a document with covers that I loved and notes about what I loved about them, so that they could get a sense of my aesthetic. One of the covers I loved was Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls, so I was thrilled when my editor told me that the same artist, Regina Flath, would be working on my cover. When they sent me the cover she’d made, I absolutely loved it, and it basically didn’t change from that point.

Who was the hardest character for you to write about?
I really struggled with Sarah. For a long time, she didn’t have much personality—she was just a nice, kind of bland, person that Jess became friends with. I had a lot of false starts before I found my groove with her, but now she is one of my favorites characters.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I really enjoy watching movie trailers. I can watch ones that I like a ridiculous number of times, and I love how good ones can tell a story while at the same time not giving too much away. 

I also like going on long walks through the park—I feel like fresh air and trees are good for my brain.

What are the three words that best describe you? 

Awkward, anxious, and genuine (or at the very least, I try to be genuine).

What books have most influenced you? 

Pretty much anything by Michael Crichton and Stephen King. The fact that Michael Crichton was able to make the most absurd concept—a theme park with actual dinosaurs—sound like the most realistic and plausible thing, it just blew me away. I was convinced that some day, maybe I could do that too. And Stephen King. He writes with such ease you can tell he wouldn't want to be doing anything else. If I could have as much fun with writing as King does, then I know I've made it. Currently it's a struggle, as I am still learning the essentials of good storytelling.

Favorite quote from your book? “Love is not a shape. There is no love triangle, no love square. Love is a network. It's a form of communication.”

What's more fun to write – the world or the characters? 

Man, this has got to be a fifty-fifty split for me. The characters populate the world, but the world shapes the characters. Writing both has their challenges as well as their joys.

Has a character ever taken over a story you were writing? Or done something that surprised you? 

Yes. I think all of my characters have surprised me to some degree at one point or another. If a character doesn't surprise you as you're writing them, then they're likely not as fleshed out as they need to be to satisfy the reader. I've never met a human that didn't surprise me with their actions at one point or another, no matter how set in their ways they seem. Fictional characters should reflect this. 

What do you like to do when you're not writing? 

I'm also a portrait artist. And I play the piano . . . and I pretty much hang out with my pups whenever possible.

 “Hold on to me,” he ordered against the crown of her head, bringing her up high enough so that she could wrap her arms around his neck. She hesitated and he shook her. “It’s either this or die here, Olena,” he hissed. “They will kill you.”
“Thanks, Captain Obvious.” They were shooting at them, after all. “I’m just not sure what makes you a safer option?”
Before he could respond, another round of gunfire when off, and Delaney’s panic spread. She linked her arms around his neck without further protest, her only thought on getting out of there intact. 
“Put your legs around my waist,” he asserted, and this time she didn’t hesitate. The second he was satisfied that she was secure, he pulled on the metal bar. 
“Activate extraction shield and pull us up, Fawna,” he said, and it took Delaney a second to realize he must have a communicator in his ear. A thin, see-through beam wrapped around them and the man still on the ground. It was green, and from the other side she saw the men shoot at it, bullets bouncing off as it hitting bulletproof glass. 
When they started rising, she yelped and tightened her arms and legs around him. She thought she heard him chuckle, but she couldn’t pull her eyes off the slowly receding ground to check. 
They were high enough now that she could see over the tops of the buildings, and more soldiers dressed in all black were approaching the mouth of the alley. She counted a dozen before stopping, not wanting to waste her time. Another black bar on a long silver string zipped past her head, and she watched it drop to hover over the guy who was firing on their attackers. 
Without looking, he reached up and grabbed on, yanking once before it started pulling him up toward them. He continued to fire his weapon, a gun she’d never seen before, the color of melted silver with a line of bright red lit up on its side. 
“Hurry it up, Fawna,” Ruckus growled. 
This time she did look up, and sucked in a deep breath. The ropes were being drawn into the underside of a large ship she hadn’t been able to make out from the ground. It reminded her a lot of a jet plane, except three times the size and with circular wings instead of sharp-tipped ones. It was black but had somehow been programmed to camouflage with the night sky. Stars winked back at her from its metallic surface as if really there. 
A bottom hatch opened up when they were only a few feet away, metal doors sliding to the sides to expose a deep beige room. The ropes bringing them up were attached to the ceiling of this room, and instead of a crank rolling it, the line merely disappeared within the metal. 
“Oh, shit,” she repeated, vaguely recalling she’d already said that. She was so distracted by the gaping mouth of the alien ship she was headed toward, she didn’t noticed the green force field around them flickering and then disappearing. 
She totally felt the bullet that sliced through the side of her left arm, though. It was a searing sensation, like someone was branding her with a hot knife, and it shot bolts of fire that immediately spiked through her bloodstream. 
She cried out, saw a burst of red stain the white leather of her jacket, and had one last moment of panic before her vision winked out and everything went black.

He gripped his dagger tighter as he leaned down to seize a large branch from the forest floor, his eyes never leaving the undead creature. The other six had long since crumpled to the ground, filling the forest with the harsh stench of burned clothes and hair. When the last corpse was near enough, Kai Sen stabbed the long branch into the corpse’s throat, and it halted, skewered like a beetle, yet it still fought to stagger toward him, scrabbling its skeletal fingers in the air. It was strong, but so was Kai Sen. He had the advantage of training and muscle, and this thing was mere rotten flesh.


Forcing the thick branch even deeper, he shoved the corpse back until with a final thrust, the thing toppled onto its back. He was on the creature before it could rise again, stomping on its extended arms with furious kicks, breaking them, before driving the branch into the earth and pinning the corpse. It struggled still, thudding its feet as Kai Sen crouched above it, one hand clutching the branch tight as he hacked at its neck with his dagger. It was exhausting and gruesome work, but the undead could only be killed with fire or decapitation. He needed to train and fight in every capacity, by magic or weapon or with his own hands. As a warrior, he knew it was crucial to his survival.

Excerpt

Marguerite produced the paper in her pocket and slid it across the glossy wooden counter. 

“Hello, miss. How can I help you today?”

“Lady Marguerite Vadnay reporting for duty,” she beamed. 

The girl took the piece of paper with one hand and looked Marguerite over. “Lady Vadnay?” She questioned. Then she opened the paper and stared at it for moment before looking back up. “Assigned to The Renegade?” Her disbelief was palpable. 

“That is correct. I’m the new second officer of ballistics.”

“Ballistics?”

“Yes. See, right there.” Marguerite reached over the counter and pointed to the assignment on the paper before spreading her fingers wide and adding: “Boom!”

The girl was not amused by her antics. She verified Marguerite’s paperwork, showed her to the outfitting station where she was given a very itchy uniform and a small trunk for personal items, then showed her to the door.

Lady Marguerite lives a life most 17th century French girls can only dream of: Money, designer
dresses, suitors and a secure future. Except, she suspects her heart may be falling for her best friend Claude, a common smithie in the family’s steam forge. When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love. Only the trip proves to be more harrowing than she anticipated. Love, adventure and restitution await her, if she can survive the voyage.
