Audio Buzz: Crudart by Gail Carriger: An original full cast audio production

ArtisticWhispers and Gail Carriger ready to introduce the world to Crudrat

Best known as the author of the Parasol Protectorate series of steampunk novels, New York Times Bestselling author Gail Carriger is renowned the world over for her stories filled with wit, humour, horror and excellent dress sense.

But Gail’s versatility stretches farther, and Dan Sawyer aims to prove just how far. Just before The Parasol Protectorate series hit it big, Gail created the first-rate YA science fiction adventure Crudrat. When her steampunk books made immaculately dressed history, Gail sensibly focused her efforts on their sequels--but she did not forget Crudrat.

Last year, she shared the manuscript with Sawyer, who made a deal for the audio rights. “It's not steampunk," he said, "it's not romance, and it's not comedy, and yet it is every inch a Gail Carriger novel. It's Gail at her dramatic best. I couldn't turn down the chance to produce something of this caliber.”

Carriger was eager to see if her audience would embrace her dramatic writing as well as her comedic. As a veteran audio producer with fourteen years experience under his belt, Sawyer has long worked toward expanding the audiobook segment of his business, and jumped at the chance to work with his longtime friend, Ms. Carriger. Their mutual affection for Crudrat and enthusiasm for the audio arts led them to try crowdfunding its production as a full-cast audiobook. "I wish I'd had it on my nightstand or in my tape deck when I was twelve," Sawyer said. "It's time for this story to find its place in the world."

Starting on October first and running through to Halloween, Sawyer and colleagues will run a kickstarter campaign attempting to raise the $7000 needed to fund the production. If they succeed, the novel will be produced as a full-cast, scored audiobook with hardcover copies of it available exclusively as rewards through the campaign.

Like all great projects, she's had a long gestation, but Maura the Crudrat is finally coming home. She’s about to start her biggest run yet and Sawyer, his team and Gail will be standing right behind her. Join their adventure at www.crudrat.com

Endless by Jessica Shirvington

Author: Jessica Shirvington
Title: Endless
Series: The Violet Eden Chapters#4
Publication: October 1,2013
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Genre: Paranormal
Source: Netgalley
LOVE WILL KILL US ALL

Violet Eden thought she was getting things under control. Then all hell breaks loose—literally. In the war between angels and exiles, she's about to face the biggest baddie of all time. Except she's not nearly ready.

The dark exile Phoenix is still messing with her head—not to mention her heart. And her undeniable attraction to Lincoln has gotten downright dangerous. When Hell unleashes its worst, Violet must embrace every facet of her angel self to save the people she cares about and the world as she knows it. But death is not the worst thing she will face..

Lilith is back and wants revenge. Violet' s mother, Evelyn, is her target but she has plans for her daughter that are more gruesome and sadistic than she can begin to imagine. She knows Lilith well and soon they will have to prepare for battle. Time is not in their favor as children are mysteriously disappearing all over the world but Violet has one task to tackle, the Academy and Josephine. They want to learn more about her yet it's their fear that resonates as they make a decision that sends Violet and Lincoln's world into chaos, love and loss. Determined to do whatever it takes to defeat Lilith, they walk right into her hands...can they survive? Will love truly be "endless" or will it end it all?

It's that love that willingness to sacrifice it all that will change Violet' s outlook and make her take a look at who is really deciding her life. I'm not entirely sure I like it but I'm curious what is next for her. I liked how she developed in this one, she's gradually getting stronger and her powers out are impressive. Initially, in the beginning, she let her anger towards her mother override her ability to see the truth of why she made the choice to die so that Violet could make her own path. Phoenix, he's so bad but so good and I still love him. It's like I could feel his inner turmoil and it was nice to get a better idea of who is really is other than dangerously delicious. The romance between Lincoln and Violet becomes every more intense and heartbreaking. Shirvington has packed so much emotion into this story and  characters, that it pours from the pages in a way that provides a connection to what the characters are experiencing. Overall, I liked this book and can't wait for the next one.

***Excerpt***

Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop.
In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot.
A cold shudder shot through me.
Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me.
My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now - dark and threatening.
Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn’t stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house.
Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make sure that I hadn’t been seeing things. The old saying “the camera never lies,” came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me.

About the Author
Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)

I will admit I scoffed at the way it started but in the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had such a good plot and the story structure was sound. Kacii – The Kooky Bookworm (Book Blogger)

Perfect Ruin (The Internment Chronicles #1) by Lauren DeStefano

Author: Lauren DeStefano
Title: Perfect Ruin
Series: The Internment Chronicles #1
Publication: October 1, 2013
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Source: Around the World Arc Tours

On Internment, the floating island in the clouds where 16-year-old Morgan Stockhour lives, getting too close to the edge can lead to madness. Even though Morgan's older brother, Lex, was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. She tries her best not to mind that her life is orderly and boring, and if she ever wonders about the ground, and why it is forbidden, she takes solace in best friend Pen and her betrothed, Basil.

Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially when she meets Judas. He is the boy being blamed for the murder — betrothed to the victim — but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lay at the heart of Internment, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find — or who she will lose.

Morgan can't help herself, she dreams of the land below. She's knows that going over the edge has consequences and most people who attempt to jump never return exactly the same. All her life, she's known the safety of Internment, having been shielded from violence until one day that changes with the death of a girl her age. The sickening realization that could’ve been her, shakes her to the core and instead of stopping her hopeless thought of the below; she becomes more persistent especially when that one death becomes more. Not sure what's really happening, Morgan will learn that there is more to her world and she must decide whether to stay or search for a way below.

I thought it was interesting how this world's created and curious how exactly is it floating in the air. Internment could be in any era, though it seems futuristic and the title is completely right for this book. The government regulates births and couples pairings happen before birth. The betrothed couples wear these rings around the necks until they get a certain age (I believe) and then transfer them to their fingers. Morgan and her betrothed Basil balance each other out perfectly; he's the calm to her chaos and enjoyed the moments when they were together. I admit I was little nervous and still am at a possible love triangle. Another character that stands out is her best friend Pen, artistic in mind but not very open to the idea that the below exists and to the possibility of going there. I think all the characters all real, especially emotional with their hopes and fears, which I think anyone can relate to.

I think the story is cool; it reminds me of Howl's Moving Castle, obviously because it's in the sky. The story moves well throughout. I'm looking forward to reading what happens next after that ending and what is in store for Morgan and her friends. Will there be a love triangle? Overall, I think this is a good beginning to a new series that readers will like.

Dawn of Arcana #11 by Rei Toma

Author & Illustrator: Rei Toma
Title: Dawn of Arcana #11
Series:  Dawn of Arcana
Publication: October 2013
Publisher: Viz Media LLC
Genre: Graphic Novel, Manga
Pages: 192 pp.
Source: Edelweiss

Series Synopsis
Princess Nakaba of Senan is forced to marry Prince Caesar of the enemy country Belquat, tantamount to becoming a hostage. While Caesar is pleasing to the eye, he is also selfish and possessive, telling Nakaba outright: “You are my property.” With only her attendant Loki at her side, Nakaba must find a way to cope with her hostile surroundings, her fake marriage...and a mysterious power!

Princess Nakaba of Senan and Prince Caesar of Belquat only married each other for the sake of peace between their two warring countries, yet the two find themselves drawn to each other. As political forces threaten to tear their world apart, and with Caesar’s departure to Belquat, the couple separates. Now Nakaba must navigate the treacherous court of Senan by herself, including deciding how to handle her new husband, Prince Adel! Will Nakaba be able to use her Arcana of Time power to take control of Senan?

I'm in love with this manga! It's not the first one I've read but what's great about is its level of maturity and the care that Toma takes to breathe life into the characters. Nakaba and Caesar have grown so much since this story began yet the responsibility to bring peace sits heavily on their shoulders. These two went through much to overcome their differences and gradually find love in the chaos but circumstances have put a halt to their marriage. No longer with the ones they love, Nakaba and Caesar are miserable but it's the strength in their hearts that make them likeable characters. Nakaba's companion and guard Loki has become darker in these later volumes and the mystery around him begins to unfold, which brings to light his motives. Prince Adel, Nakaba's new mate at first seems to hate her but maybe her harbors some nicer feelings towards her than she first realized. In addition to coping with being apart from Caesar, Nakaba is using her Arcana more often, which will lead her to make a very bold decision that will change the playing field completely. Overall, the writing, story and illustrators are good and I look forward to more of this series.

Once We Were by Kat Zhang

Author: Kat Zhang
Title: Once We Were
Series: The Hybrid Chronicles #2
Publication: September 17, 2013
Publisher: HarperCollins
Source: Netgalley

"I'm lucky just to be alive"

Eva was never supposed to have survived this long. As the recessive soul, she should have faded away years ago. Instead, she lingers in the body she shares with her sister soul, Addie. When the government discovered the truth, they tried to “cure” the girls, but Eva and Addie escaped before the doctors could strip Eva’s soul away.

Now fugitives, Eva and Addie find shelter with a group of hybrids who run an underground resistance. Surrounded by others like them, the girls learn how to temporarily disappear to give each soul some much-needed privacy. Eva is thrilled at the chance to be alone with Ryan, the boy she’s falling for, but troubled by the growing chasm between her and Addie. Despite clashes over their shared body, both girls are eager to join the rebellion.

Yet as they are drawn deeper into the escalating violence, they start to wonder: How far are they willing to go to fight for hybrid freedom? Faced with uncertainty and incredible danger, their answers may tear them apart forever.

I picked this up because the idea of two souls living in one body intrigued me. I liked the thought of all the possible complications that this could cause when they would begin to explore feelings of love and it's interesting to see a little of that in this book. Addie and Eva both experiment with going under to give the other more freedom and privacy but Addie's at first reluctant but embraces it when she becomes interested in a boy seems to change her mind and I'm sure other things, she eventually gets over her discomfort. I think their exploration of alone time messes up what the girls have and distrust and secrecy starts to creep in.

I actually like Eva more in the first book and Addie a bit in this one towards the end. She seems more cautious than Eva, who is still adjusting to having control of their body. Eva's learning the world as she goes and like most teenagers wants acceptance among her peers, so when Sabine and her friends invite then into their fold she jumps at the chance. She begins to become involved in a dangerous scheme to show the world that hybrids are here and willing to fight back to stop the institutions from experimenting on them. Eva falls so deep that she becomes blinded by her want to please her friends that she stops listening to Addie and loses sight on what's right and it's too late as events start to escalate beyond her control.

I'm curious how the romance will unfold in the next book and how the girls will progress. They can't seem to stay out of trouble. There is one thing I want to know...what was on the tape that Kitty felt was so important to retrieve and give to Addie? Overall, the girls are realistic, especially Eva, with her need to experience everything for herself, no longer content living in the shadows but out front and making decisions. Addie's anger, fear and wanting make it easy to connect with her as well. I think readers that enjoyed the first book will enjoy the girls’ struggle being independent and separate people.

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Title: The Dream Thieves
Series:  The Raven Boys #2
Publication: September 17, 2013
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 416 pp.
Source: Netgalley

The second installment in the all-new series from the masterful, #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater!

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after..
.

Ronan seethes with wiry energy and fury that simmers just beneath the surface. This book seems to focus more on Ronan and his otherness. When I read the Raven Boys, I felt that there was more to him and his anger was unusual. He's seems to always be on edge and dangerous even. The story begins with a dream and a memory of his father telling him to keep his ability a secret but there a thing about secrets, they are sometimes hard to keep.

" Anything that didn't impale itself on the sharp line of this sleeping boy's cruel mouth would be tangled in the merciless hooks of his tattoo, pulled beneath his skin to drown"

It's not all about Ronan and Adam's changing as his tie to Cabeswater strengthens. He's so easily angered and his has this huge chip on his shoulder about his social status. He's so worried about people having pity on him, especially Gansey that he gets blindsided by his emotions. It feels like he pushing further away from Gansey because he is rich and doesn't seem to let that define who he is. I think he has an unnecessary resentment towards Gansey. Adam is a pickle for me and  is not my favorite character, he's allowed his past and feelings about his status dictate his actions. Then there is how he starts to lash out at Blue, the girl he suppossedly likes, to the point that she begins to question what she saw in him. Of course, he doesn't know about the predictions that she will kill the one she loves....that's her secret to keep or not.

The tension in these relationship aren't the only problems this group has, something has happened to Cabeswater, which halts their quest to discover Glendower and Adam's possibly the key to fixing it. A stranger shows up searching for an object that deals with Cabeswater quest and may mean danger for Blue and her Raven Boys. Another character that shows up a lot is Kavinsky, who is really creepy and has an unnatural obsession with Ronan which leads to an escalating conclusion.

This is a good story crafted with the diverse intricacies of the characters struggles and their lives. I liked getting to know more about Ronan and his dreams. Also it was nice to see a hint of romance woven within the pages.Overall, this story is all about the boys and how they interact with one another and Blue who is the token girl of the bunch, that fate has dealt a hand to lose the one she loves with a kiss, the big question is which boy and how will it impact the future of the Raven Boys?

Excerpt
But Taylor wasn’t an idiot. He moved to catch my eyes. “It’s lonely here, Zoe. Mary’s hot and all, especially with her badass gig going on—you know, when she’s not laid out with busted ribs—but she’s not like us.”
Not like us. Taylor was the only other GAP here. His parents had had him genetically altered before they’d died in a car crash. Before they’d had a chance to have the procedure done to his sister. Before he and Hannah had been adopted by cult relatives.
“I think we need more than just that in common to make something work,” I said. I’d had a GAP boyfriend before, and that relationship had been a disaster on so many levels.
“Okay, like what?” Taylor smirked. “Physical attraction? Check. Intelligence compatibility? Check. Marooned on a desert rock? Check.”
I smiled. Taylor was right about all those things. I did find him attractive and intelligent. It was what had gotten me into trouble at the commune. All that and his charisma had charmed me into kissing him.
It was the kiss of death for my tenuous relationship with Noah. I’d apologized a million times since and had done everything short of begging Noah to let me back in. Actually, I had begged. He’d stubbornly insisted that his lack of GAP status was reason enough for us to stay apart.
That and the fact that he no longer trusted me. Or trusted in my memories of him. Memories lost prior to our stint at the commune, thanks to dear ol’ Grandpa V, who’d stolen them from me.
Taylor wasn’t wrong, though. Sharing GAP status did mean something. I wouldn’t have to worry about him cutting out on me because of that, using it as an excuse to leave. To stay away. I longed for a commitment that went beyond just looking out for my physical safety. And he was charming and cute.
But I couldn’t deny what my heart wanted and right now it wanted Noah Brody.
Taylor could read the conflict on my face. “Come on, Zoe. Don’t waste time waiting for him. He’s moved on.”
My heart stopped when he said that. The truth hurt. He might or might not have moved on to Mary, but it was pretty obvious he wanted to move on from me. I pinched my eyes shut, but a lone tear escaped. Taylor’s finger ran along my cheek, scooping it up. I gasped at his gentle touch. I might be pining for Noah, but I couldn’t deny that I also had feelings for Taylor Blake.
Taylor’s mouth moved to my ear, and I trembled when his hot breath caressed my neck.
“He’s not worth it.”
Noah’s voice chimed in. “Am I interrupting?”
