Interview with Author E.G. Glover

 Chat with Author E.G. Glover
Author Bio:
E G Glover began his independent author career as co-writer of Fear the Beast Within: The Fear Series, Book One (Paranormal Romance), in early 2012. This series has continued and will conclude with Book Four.

One year later, Glover released his firstsolo work, A Twist In Time: Mystery Hill Series, Book One (Gothic/Time Travel Romance), which has sold in several countries around the world and currently published by Relative Term Press. Times Not Traveled: Mystery Hill Series, Book Two, also available.

Glover flirted with idea of writing in high school by authoring various poems and short stories, but it wasn't until late 2011 that his dream of writing a novel finally began to take shape.

Born and raised in northwest Alabama, Glover hopes his writing will prove a romantic story can be told with a male's point of view entwined and still hold the romanticism that readers enjoy.

Tell us about Times Not Traveled?
Times Not Traveled is the second book in the Mystery Hill Series. Mystery Hill, an ancient stone circle in New Hampshire, is a place of legend and its true purpose has all but been lost with the passage of time. The location's caretaker, Richard Adahy, and his peculiar pet crow, Percy, guard the true secret of the stones. The circle can be used as a way to travel backward and forth, but only at certain times of the year.

This chapter of the book series follows Abby Morris, who has recently moved to New Hampshire to pursue a new job. Her new home has led her to Thomas Collier, an editor for a local newspaper, the sort of man she always yearned to find. There are just a couple of problems standing in the way of her new found happiness: Thom’s ex-girlfriend, Sarah, and restless nights where she is bombarded with otherworldly dreams of a black bird watching her every move.

Sarah Wisdom’s road to happiness had taken an unexpected turn when her boyfriend took an exit out of her life. With Thom gone, she has to make a new road to contentment, or fight her way up an old path fueled by the desperation to be with the man she loves. Armed with nothing but her cell phone and a head full of tormenting visions of a malevolent crow, Sarah embarks on a trip to reclaim what she knows is rightfully hers. It’s a journey that will lead her to an ancient stone circle known as Mystery Hill.

How did you get interested in writing mystery fiction?
This series actually came about after I caught an episode of 'In Search of...', hosted by Leonard Nimoy. The show discussed the real location of New Hampshire's stone circle, now commonly known as America's Stonehenge. With all the mystery surrounding the location, I figured it would be a wonderful setting for my series.

What are three words that best describe you?
curious, fanatic, researcher

What book are you reading now?
Recently I've been doing a lot of research on the possible purposes of stone circles across the globe. So, most of my reading has not been of a fictional nature. However, the last work of fiction that I read and thoroughly enjoyed was Moon Called, by Patricia Briggs.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
The one big thing that I've learned is, you have to find your audience. If there is something that you enjoy, then there are probably other people in the world that enjoy it too. I've always loved science fiction and in particular, time travel. Ever since I was a child I have wondered what it would be like to visit a place that I have known my whole life, but at an earlier time in history. I would love to see what had changed over time and what had stayed the same. Once you find your audience, encourage them to pass your work on to others. Word-of-mouth is a powerful thing!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Oh, definitely a night owl! When I am writing, my best work seems to show up between the hours of one and three AM.

What's your favorite book or writer?
That is a tough question. It depends on the genre. I would have to say that Ray Bradbury would have to be my all time favorite author. His ability to tell a story, even a fanciful one, has always intrigued my imagination.

What’s more fun to write – the world or the characters?
I enjoy creating the world that my character's live in. If their world is properly developed, the characters basically 'tell me' what they would do in that type of setting. They become their own person within the story.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
Oh yes! Very often they do! That is one way that I know I'm on a roll with a story. There have been times I have deleted several pages of a story because the character keeps 'telling me', "I wouldn't do that!"

Is there any question that you wish interviewers would ask? Not that I can think of, I just enjoy being able to share my little tales AND see people enjoy them.

Thanks so much for your time and I look forward to meeting you in November. E G. Glover will be at the Tuscaloosa Public Library on November 14, 2015 for the Yomucon: Cosplay at the Library Convention.

Reveal: Spark by Holly Schindler

Holly Schindler’s Spark:
When the right hearts come to the Avery Theater—at the right time—the magic will return. The Avery will come back from the dead.

Or so Quin’s great-grandmother predicted many years ago on Verona, Missouri’s most tragic night, when Nick and Emma, two star-crossed teenage lovers, died on the stage. It was the night that the Avery’s marquee lights went out forever.

It sounds like urban legend, but one that high school senior Quin is now starting to believe, especially when her best friend, Cass, and their classmate Dylan step onto the stage and sparks fly. It seems that magic can still unfold at the old Avery Theater and a happier ending can still be had—one that will align the stars and revive not only the decrepit theater, but also the decaying town. However, it hinges on one thing—that Quin gets the story right this time around.

Holly Schindler brings the magic of the theater to life in this tale of family ties, fate, love, and one girl’s quest to rewrite history.

“In my hometown, the restoration of a former movie theater on the town square provided the genesis for my new YA novel, SPARK. Who among us hasn’t dreamed of seeing their name in blazing neon across a gigantic marquee? Let me invite you to dim the lights and draw back the velvet curtains—let your imagination run wild as you enter my fictional Avery Theater, where literally anything goes…”
—Holly Schindler

Holly Schindler is the author of three previous YA novels: PLAYING HURT as well as the critically acclaimed FERAL (starred PW review) and A BLUE SO DARK (starred Booklist review, ForeWord Book of the Year silver medal, IPPY gold medal). Spotlight, Excerpt & Giveaway. The Storm by Virginia Bergin

From CHAPTER TWO of The Storm by Virginia Bergin
I came down off the moor, half-blinded and face hurting and neck hurting and everything hurting, and headed straight for home.
I wound down through country lanes, blinking faster than a strobe light, face scrunching with pain, and trying not to wipe my stinging eyes. Still I fumbled about, opening every field gate I passed. I’d been doing that for weeks: opening gates, opening up chicken coops (you don’t want to think how any survived: Attack of the Cannibal Chickens). Sometimes there’d been creatures in the fields—horses, pigs, cows, sheep, llamas (those had been real; the herd of unicorns I thought I’d released probably wasn’t)—sometimes not. Still, I opened them.
So I suppose it was probably me that let the sheep out, the one that had nearly killed me.
(See what I did there? I blame it on the sheep.)
First farm I came to, I tried to go in. I wasn’t even thinking “∞.” I was thinking “.” They hurt so bad, and they wouldn’t stop weeping, and I was scared that if I didn’t find something to wash them with immediately, I wouldn’t be able to see at all.
A scrawny sheepdog came out into the yard and barked at me.
I know the type; they won’t attack you. They’re just telling you: this is not your house.
“You good girl,” I said—or tried to. Since the picture thoughts had taken over, I didn’t even speak to myself out loud anymore, and even though I had just shouted at my own shadow, my voice came out all broken up and ragged and weird.
“Good girl,” I tried again, and me and the dog, whose bark also seemed a little strained and peculiar (it could just have been the shock of seeing someone), both stared miserably at each other—except it was getting harder and harder by the second to stare at anything.
“Please…” I begged, but no way was the good girl—who might have been a boy—going to let me in that house.
I drove back home on a tractor. The good girl wasn’t too sure about that either, but she gave me the benefit of the doubt. She even followed me, as if she thought it might be time to go to work or something…but that skinny girl, she couldn’t keep up. She barked at me to stop and wait for her, but I couldn’t. I didn’t. I didn’t even want to hear that bark.
Dogs, animals…people…they’ll break your heart.
I zoomed home on that tractor, so high up on that driver’s seat that over the banks and hedgerows, I could make out blurry fields. I didn’t feel hemmed in and spooked like I normally do, not knowing what might be around the next bend. Even if we smacked into a wall, the wall would come off worse.
Blind Farmer Ruby, rollin’ along. And whatever I might have rolled over, I didn’t see it. I just felt the occasional bump. There is some terrible stuff lying about these days.
I made myself dump the tractor at the end of our road because I was worried if I went any farther, it’d get stuck between the lines of cars and I’d lose an exit route. I dumped it and I ran, my eyes so blind, my hands so shaky I could hardly get the key in the lock.
I stepped inside the house and called, “Dad?!”
Yeah. That’d be the last time.
I slurped cola and washed my eyes with the tiny bit of water I had left. Couldn’t even see anything much in the mirror, just a blurry version of my face that looked like it felt: puffy, red, and busted. I squinted at one particular mark on my cheek. Double circles. Matched my watches. (I wore four: two digital, two wind up—don’t ask.) Perfect imprints of one wrist’s worth on my cheek. But it was my eyes that looked weirdest.
“Love! You look like Joe Bugner,” Grandma Hollis once said to me, at the time when I’d first been told my mom and dad were splitting up and I’d cried so much my eyes puffed up.
I didn’t know who Joe Bugner was; I still don’t. All I ever knew was that he was a boxer.
Yeah, I looked like I’d been in a fight.
There were decisions to be made. I knew that, but all I wanted to do was go to bed. No idea what the time was, no idea what day it was. No idea what I was going to do. The only thing I did know was that I needed to do something. But first, there would be sleep.
It was a very long, bad, and snore-y sleep. It was snore-y because my nose was full of blood. I couldn’t breathe properly, and eventually I worked out this was how come I kept waking myself up—waking myself up but not really waking up—thinking the ghost girl was in the room, speaking some growly shadow language at me. The last time I snored myself awake, I picked out dried blood from my nose (too much information?). It hurt a lot. I guzzled cola and went back to sleep and dreamed the ghost girl in the mist had become a death angel, coming toward me as church bells tolled.
But I wasn’t dreaming.

This October Natalie D. Richards releases her latest YA thriller, MY SECRET TO TELL. To celebrate, Natalie is here for a quick Q&A and has brought an excerpt to share!

What question would you really like to answer that you have not been asked yet, and what is your answer to that question?

Probably, If you weren’t a writer, what would you be?

Um, teen services librarian FOR THE WIN.  I would be encouraged to read as often as possible.  Teen literature would BE MY JOB.  Okay, it’s already my job, but still!  Sounds perfect to me!

An Excerpt:
“Emmie?”
My name lands somewhere between a hiccup and a sob, and my feet stall out on the sidewalk in front of my house. I adjust my grip on the phone, hoping I misheard her tone. This doesn’t sound like Chelsea. This voice is breathless.
Frightened.
“I’m here,” I say. “What’s up? You don’t sound right.”
“I’m not.” She takes a shuddery breath.
My shirt’s sticking to my back and cicadas are click-buzzing the end of another blistering day, but I go cold. Something’s wrong.
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
“It’s my dad, Emmie,” she says. I can tell she’s crying.
I grab my chest. It’s too tight. Burning. “What happened?”
Her words all tumble out on top of one another, interrupted by shaky breaths. I try to pick out pieces that make sense. “He’s hurt—bleeding—we’re behind the ambulance and I can’t—he’s not—someone attacked him.”
I start climbing the porch steps, because she’ll need me. I’m her best friend, so I should be there. I need to change clothes and go. “You’re on the way to the hospital, right? They’ll help him there.”
Another sharp breath. “I don’t know if they can. He’s so bad. So bad.”
My heart clenches. “Where are you?”
“We’re almost there. Joel’s with me.”
“Okay, good. I’m coming,” I say, crossing my porch and hauling my front door open. “Let me just call Mom. I’ll borrow the car.”
Chelsea’s still crying when I storm down the hallway toward my bedroom.
“Emmie, I can’t find Deacon…”
“Your brother never answers his phone,” I say, pushing open my door. “I’ll run by the docks first and—”
“No. No, he was there. He was at the house.”
Chelsea makes a strangled sound, and I notice the liquid-thick heat in my bedroom. The kind of heat that tells me the air conditioner is broken. Or my window is open.
My gaze drags to my fluttering white curtains, to the dark smudge on the windowsill.
Chelsea’s voice goes low and raspy. “He ran, Emmie. God, he was there with Dad. He was in the house, but he ran.”
I swivel with an invisible fist lodged in my throat. My bathroom door is open, a red-black smudge beneath the knob.
My mouth goes dry, my pulse thumping slower than it should. Then I see the blood on the floor by my sink, and my heart tumbles end over end.
“We’re here. I’ll call soon,” Chelsea says and hangs up.
I see him, his back to my tub and his dark head bowed on one bent knee. Oh God.
He’s covered in blood. It’s on his legs, his hands. Dripping onto my white tile floor. He looks up, and my heart goes strangely steady.
I take a breath that tastes like purpose. “Deacon?”
