I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

The Rundown: Kennedy is in the cemetery one night when she sees an apparition, thinking she's mistaken she brushes it off. She doesn't know that what she saw is a vengeance spirit and just brought home. She leaves to spend time with her best friend only to discovers her mother dead and something in the house in trying to kill her as well. Her life becomes less normal as she learns that maybe she didn't know her mother at all when two twin demon slayer hotties show up to exorcise the spirit after her. Jared and Lukas have known about the Legion since they were younger but for whatever reason Kennedy's mother chose to keep this life a secret from her. She's gets thrown into this world because they believe she is the fifth person to complete their circle but a few members see her as a liability. Kennedy and the rest of the crew have decided to find a way to keep the powerful demon that's hunting them all from getting out but what they find that maybe this weapon isn't meant for what they think and the truth is more blurred than it seems.

This book makes me think of some television about battling demons such as Charmed and even as others have stated the show Supernatural. I can really see the similarities. This story dives right in from the being with the action and paces steadily throughout. The characters are okay. Kennedy feels like everyone close to her always leaves and I think that makes her reluctant to let others in. She's strong and brave even though this new world frightens her. Jared and Lukas have their own issues because Lukas faults Jared for something that happened. He thinks Jared only makes things worse, so he uses that guilt to keep him away from Kennedy. She's drawn to them both but one boy finds his way into her heart. Overall, it's an okay read that those that like paranormal books with demon slayers, action and a hint of romance.
