Synopsis
Detective Archie Sheridan is about to receive a birthday present from the last person he ever wants to see again: Gretchen Lowell.

The investigation into Jack Reynolds's drug enterprise is heating up and has Archie heading off to attend a masked Halloween party on Jack Reynolds's island, where Susan is a reluctant guest. But the next morning one of the guests is found murdered, and Archie quickly realizes that nothing is what it seems. Only one thing is clear: Gretchen is back, and she's been closer than anyone thinks. On Halloween Eve, with time running out, Archie will have to risk everything, and choose wisely whom to trust, if he and his loved ones are going to live through the night.

Archie is about to have a birthday to remember orchestrated by serial killer Gretchen Lowell. She just will never ever leave this man' alone, I'm curious what about Archie keeps drawing her. Archie for whatever reason isn't over her yet either. So, in this book Archie's tasked with checking on the well-being of an undercover agent tasked with bringing down a notorious drug business but when he gets there he notices something strange is going on. When he finds Leo, the agent, blood is on his hands, which leaves Archie unconscious for hours on the beach with no idea of what happened the last few hours. Well, a body turns up and it seems a serial killer is on the loose, the likely candidate is Gretchen because she was there and she makes sure he knows it. She is however adamant that she's not the one that did it but that doesn't mean she's not relishing in the chaos. It's exactly what she needs to lure Archie back into her sadistic games. Can Archie catch the killer before more bloodshed and save Susan before it's too late?

The characters interact well together. Archie's so messed up, Gretchen continues to screw up his life but the dynamic between the two of them is addictive. Now, don't get me wrong I'm so ready for Gretchen to be permanently caught, she's a slippery criminal. Archie's so oblivious to things that he misses out on so many signs because she distracts him with her cunning and beauty. There is one another girl, Susan, who clearly wants Archie and it's nice to see that he admits at least to himself that he has feelings for her. I think he's afraid because is Gretchen notices how he feels, she'll kill her. Susan can come across as an annoying menace, she's always in the mix of the investigations, whether she means to or not. What I do like about is her ability to get it; she's quicker than Archie at figuring things out sometimes.

The audio production is great. Delaine does a wonderful job of giving a distinctive voice to each character. Gretchen's voice is seductive and chilling, exactly how I would imagine her to sound. Archie seems exhausted and weary from the constant pull of Gretchen's antics. Delaine's has brought to life these characters in a way that's brings life to what Cain has written. I think this is a good interpretation to audio and I look forward to listening to Delaine again.

  1. Sounds like a great murder mystery. :) I'm a little reluctant to get into a new series though...
