Never, ever cry. . . . Eureka Boudreaux's mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn't, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger, who comes closer to making her cry than anyone has before.

But Ander doesn't know Eureka's darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story, that Ander might be telling the truth . . . and that her life has far darker undercurrents than she ever imagined. From Lauren Kate comes an epic saga of heart-stopping romance, devastating secrets, and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away.

Can you imagine feeling broken inside and not be able to cry about it? Eureka doesn't cry, not for any reason. This was something her mother made sure she never did and the ability to hold it all in comes second nature to her. She didn't even cry at her mother's funeral but there is one boy that's makes her emotions all wobbly, Ander, who also has stalker tendencies but it's for her safety. Her best friend Brooks seems to have interest in her emotional well-being and thinks it about time that she releases the pains she holds inside. Eureka will discover that her future is nothing what she thought it would be and the people around have motives to tilt the balance in their favor.

Eureka is an okay character, she similar to Luce in Fallen. Each plays a big role in some secret life and they somehow hold the key to changing everything. She's angry and seems to have given up on living. Her father tiptoes around her, letting his wife deal with the issues of what his daughter needs. Honestly, she needs him to try, to be there and not look at her likes she's something other....to step in and see what his wife thinks is best may not be for Eureka.

The male interests are okay. Ander comes off as confident but gentle and caring. He's mysterious but strong and he makes a huge decision for Eureka in the very beginning. Brooks comes as unpredictable, Eureka never knows if he will be supportive or vindictive and eventually she will discover why he's being so strange. Overall, Eureka is an okay character with at a tough point in her life. Her mother gone and she feels she should be as well but what gets left behind swoops her into an adventure, that will have big costs to her yet may be what she needs to break free of her emotional prison. The writing and characters are okay. Kate has created an intriguing fantasy that I believe those that loved the Fallen series will enjoy.
