Crossroads Blog Tour Day 4: Author Kelly Hashway

What's your favorite to write, the villain or the hero? Why?
Ooh, that’s a tough question. Villains are so much fun to write because they cause the conflict and tension in the story, so I really enjoy that. Wow, I sound evil, don’t I? On the other hand, everyone loves to be the hero, so stepping into the hero’s shoes when I write is a powerful feeling. I’m going to have to say it’s a tie.

Touch of Death is about necromancers, what inspired you to write about death and mythology?
I’ve always loved mythology, but I feel there are certain Greek characters who got bad reputations for no good reason. I’m talking mostly about Medusa. She ends up being cursed by Athena all because Poseidon wanted to be with Medusa and Athena was jealous. And Medusa’s curse results in a lot of death. I wanted to show a different side of Medusa in my books and show people that she wasn’t really a monster. She was wrongfully cursed in my mind. Medusa couldn’t turn down Poseidon because he was a god, and maybe she loved him in return. I decided to make her a very motherly figure in my series, and when Jodi sees her, she’s beautiful—except for the snakes she has for hair. My hope is that people root for Medusa as the story progresses because she means everything to the Ophi in my series. Having characters who are descendents of Medusa naturally meant that death would be a huge part of the books. The Ophi are necromancers and they’re also poisonous to humans. The positive side to the series is that having necromancers for characters means that even the dead aren’t off limits. Any character can return, even if they die in the first book, and that’s pretty awesome.

  1. I don't have one favorite paranormal author; I like many. I love Angela McCallister, Rita Wells, JT Geisinger, Calinda B, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Anne Bishop, and so many others. Each time there's a blog hop, I find new authors. Thank you for the giveaway. michelle_willms(at)yahoo(dot)com.
