Why do you think Dystopia is so popular with teens right now?
I think teens are fascinated by characters living in a society where they are oppressed in some way, where idealism has gone wrong. I think in a lot of ways it parallels their own lives. Teens are struggling to gain autonomy, to forge their own distinct path and figure out what they believe is important—which may be very different from the beliefs their parents or teachers or others in their community have.

What’s your favorite scary movie or character?
I watch a LOT of scary movies, but I can’t say that I have one favorite character. As a kid, Freddy and Michael Myers scared the beejeezus out of me, but over time I think the movies that affect me most are the ones that mess with me psychologically. Instead of naming one favorite, I’ll name the ones that impacted me the most at various times.

As a tiny kid, it was the television show with Vincent Price called “Once Upon A Midnight Scary” (not a movie technically, but holy crap I didn’t sleep for days after—I was about seven I guess).

The Exorcist—just makes me sleepless every single time.

Psycho—Hitchcock’s original—the feeling of dread is palpable throughout and Norman is just awesome and complex.

Halloween—the image of Michael staring up at Laurie Strode from between the clothesline—still gives me chills.

The Blair Witch—the grainy realistic recording approach coupled with no physical monster left me trembling at the end—my brain just went wild with the possibilities.

Dawn of the Dead—the little zombie girl in the hallway at the beginning had me closing my bedroom door and locking it every night.

Paranormal Activity—I lived in a haunted house and the first time I saw this it revived that time of life for me.
