The spine-tingling horror of Stephen King meets an eerie mystery worthy of Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series in Kate Karyus Quinn's haunting debut.

On a cool autumn night, Annaliese Rose Gordon stumbled out of the woods and into a high school party. She was screaming. Drenched in blood. Then she vanished.

A year later, Annaliese is found wandering down a road hundreds of miles away. She doesn't know who she is. She doesn't know how she got there. She only knows one thing: She is not the real Annaliese Rose Gordon.

Now Annaliese is haunted by strange visions and broken memories. Memories of a reckless, desperate wish . . . a bloody razor . . . and the faces of other girls who disappeared. Piece by piece, Annaliese's fractured memories come together to reveal a violent, endless cycle that she will never escape—unless she can unlock the twisted secrets of her past

So, I decided to read this because it sounded interesting, though usually I don't do scary books. It is more creepy and weird than it is scary. One night Annaliese gets the boy she always wanted but it comes with a price and she finds herself covered in blood, then she disappears. One day she awakens changed, having no recollection of the previous other than the past few days. Her memory is fragmented but at night her dreams provide clues to a truth that she's forgotten and that will change her life forever.

Anna comes across as a little crazy. In the beginning, she speaks of herself in the third person, more like she is the observant of another life. She refers to her parents as the father and the mother. Her parents want so much for the girl they lost to completely return but "the mother" is so fragile, she's happy just to have her daughter back. In a way, Anna craves this nurturing and clings to it. The father seems distant possibly afraid that she will crack and it's noticeable that he's concerned about his wife as well. Basically it's a tedious balancing act that they play.

There are love interests without a triangle but I really couldn't connect to it with all the revelations of Anna's past. She comes across as detached like she's uncertain of emotion yet she's not unfeeling. What I liked most about Anna is her strength of will and her determination to alter her future once everything begins to make sense. Overall, this was a quick read, the plot is twisted but this haunting tale has the blood, mystery and suspense that thriller seekers will enjoy.
