Interview:Author Veronika Carnaby

Author Bio:
American author and poet, Veronika Carnaby, possesses a vintage charm that transcends well into her written works. Recognized for her Beat-style prose, her pieces have garnered international recognition after appearing in such publications and functions as The Ed Sullivan Show blog, SESAC Magazine, SXSW, Dan's Papers Literary Journal, and the SESAC New York Music Awards, among others. Whether penning poems, short stories, or novels, Carnaby infuses her writing with a poignancy and passion for 20th century culture.

Who is Veronika Carnaby? What drives you?
I’m as simple and as complex a creature as anyone else. My fuel is my passion. If I didn’t truly respect and value writing, I wouldn’t have stuck with it and persevered the way I have for so many years.
How did you come up with the idea to write Bohemia? What was your inspiration?
It was a culmination of life events, which of course were fictionalized around the edges, and sheer inspiration from Beat Generation authors. Roll that up into one and I thought it’d be best represented as a story that takes place in 1960, during which time society was on the brink of a cultural explosion, if you will. It was, dare I say, a transitionary moment from a conventional period to a riskier, more modern environment. That fit the characters and the greater concept of the story wonderfully.
Who was the hardest character to translate to the page? I

In all honesty, I didn’t find myself struggling with any one character in particular. Each character possesses a tiny grain of reflection of people I’ve known or have met throughout the years, so their personas came to me quite naturally and smoothly.
What is your favorite type of music?

I’m drawn to a lot of classic rock, folk, some psychedelic jams too. I’m not someone who stays strictly with one artist or genre of music. The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Bon Jovi, Buddy Holly, I love them all.
What was the hardest part in writing Bohemia?

There were some rough patches, just like any other writing process, but for the most part, it’s been a smooth ride. That was the whole point of writing it in a spontaneous burst, anyway. No time allotted for overthinking. It was all about the art of trusting your instincts.
Tell us about your most loved character in your book?

Though it’s hard to choose just one protagonist, I have to give props to Valerie. She could’ve thrown in the towel on so many occasions when the world scoffed in her face, but she kept going like the resilient little lady she is!
Given the choice, would you choose invisibilty or flight? why?

Most certainly invisibility, as I try to stay as grounded as possible.
Are there any projects in the works?

You know it. There always are. Believe it or not, I’ve already started penning my next book which you might be leafing through sooner than you think. Aside from that, I’m always scribbling little ditties here and there, which sometimes develop into larger projects.
If there was a question that you wished an interviewer would ask you...what would be the question and the answer?

I’ll leave this little gem for the interviewers to decide!
