Synopsis
In the icy, monster-plagued world of the Frost, compassion might get you killed, and Lia Weaver knows this better than anyone. After the monsters kill her parents, she must keep the family farm running or risk losing her siblings to reassignment by the village Elders. With dangers on all sides, she can’t afford to let her emotions lead her astray. But when her sister finds a fugitive bleeding to death in the forest, a young man from beyond the Frost named Gabe, Lia does the unthinkable.

She saves his life.

Giving shelter to the fugitive could get her in trouble, for the Elders have always described the advanced society of people beyond the Frost, the “Farthers,” as dangerous and cruel. Lia is startled to find that Gabe is empathetic and intelligent—and handsome. And she might even be falling for him.

But time is running out. The monsters in the forest are growing bold and restless. The village leader is starting to ask questions. Farther soldiers are searching for Gabe. Is compassion—and love—worth the risk?

Finally, when a startling discovery challenges everything she thought was true about her life, Lia realizes exactly what she must do.

Thoughts:I thought this story was interesting. Lia is a brave girl because I most definitely would not walk in the forest alone knowing something is out there that could shred me to pieces. I am curious about the creatures in the forest and why they are so drawn to techno stuff. I want to know why the people of this world harbor so much hatred towards one another and why they live the way they do. This is revealed some in the book but it seems it is more to it than that. Which, I am quite sure will be answered in the later books.
Lia is an orphan, leaving her responsible for her siblings, and if they don't continue to make their quota, they could be separated. Separation would be bad for all them, she could be married off to someone she doesn't love and her sibling could end up in places with people who could care less about them. So, one day after leaving town she comes home to find her sister missing and has discovered the stranger, Gabe, injured in the woods. She begs Lia to help him not knowing that in saving him many secrets and lies would be revealed. I liked how the author mixed technology with a dystopian, fantasy twist. The mystery leading up to the end was good and the characters were believable. I liked that the romance aspect was subtle, not so intense but sweet. Now, the story pace was slower than I would have liked but other than that it is an okay read.

  1. This sounds like a cross between The Giver and Hunger Games.

"I am curious about the creatures in the forest and why they are so drawn to techno stuff."
That statement made me laugh. I instantly thought techno music, and was wondering if the village or people tend to blast techno music. So I laughed quietly to myself for a good while.

  2. Oh P.S. My favorite book...hmm...that is a tough question to ask me. I guess as of right now it would be Legend. I haven't read actual books in a while. I've been reading graphic novels and series...and I separate those in my mind.

  3. My favorite is Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. That's a really tough question. :D
