About the Book
Gemma Hart never knows when her father is going to whisk her back in time. Her toes start tingling and she has a few minutes to find a secret haven where she can disintegrate and appear in another time and place. While “across the line,” her training and skills are put to the test as she completes a mission that will change history for the lucky few her father has selected.

Gemma's parents are adamant that secrecy is paramount to her family’s safety. If people knew what they were capable of, they could be "used and abused", as her mother always says. Afraid she might accidentally utter the truth and break the ancient oath of her people, Gemma spends her school days as a loner. Only one thing can throw her sheltered life askew... Harrison Granger.

Harrison never expected to talk to the strange Hart girl, but after a brief encounter he can't stop thinking about her. He begins a campaign to chisel away her icy veneer and is met with unexpected consequences. As he slowly wins this girl over, he enters a surreal world that has him fighting to keep his newfound love and his life.

My Thoughts: I've had read several books with a time traveling aspect and this one has a bit of a twist that I am intrigued to learn more about. Gemma, may at first come off as a bit standoffish and mean but once you understand that she has good intentions behind her actions, she is very easy to like. I liked her initially because it felt like more was behind it, especially when seeing her true feelings about the way her parents have chosen for her and her siblings to live. That brings me to her parents, something is shady about them and it seems to me they are hiding something. Now, Harrison the love interest is a bit intense, when he falls for someone he dives in, and I hope he survives the ride that he has placed himself on in his efforts to pursue Gemma. Another thing that caught my attention is his mother, something is not right with her either. The plot, characters and pace were all very well done in this work. This book is full of secrets, and I want to know what the deal is with the parents in this story, so I will be reading the next one to find out. Officially hooked on this series!!

Character Interview:Harrison from Golden Blood by Melissa Pearl

What were you thoughts the first time you saw Gemma?
I thought she was the most stunning thing I'd ever seen. She has these amazing eyes that just pierce you and, well I mean, come on, she's one sexy chick. I really wanted to talk her that day, but after I smiled at her she went white and turned the other way. (He laughs).
What is one thing about yourself that Gemma doesn’t know and you can share with us?
Hmmm - that's a tough one. Me and Gem talk about a lot of stuff. I don't like secrets much. But... she probably would be horrified if I told her about my shoplifting phase. I don't know what was wrong with me. I was just being a jerk. We'd moved town again and I was angry with my mom about it. Bryan was new on the scene. I liked him and the family, but I was a little annoyed at having to share my mother. The guy who owned the general store down the road was real scrooge and told me off one day because he thought I was trying to steal something. I thought I'd teach him a lesson and next time I went in, I took something without paying. It became this game. I was determined to get as much stuff out of that store as I could. Bryan caught me doing it one day. I didn't realize he'd followed me, apparently he'd seen my stash under the bed. He pulled me aside and promised he wouldn't tell anyone as long as I returned everything. That was the most shameful day of my life. Thankfully Bryan came with me and the shopkeeper was surprisingly good about it.
If you could do one thing over again or differently what would it be?
Ahhh - regret. Yes, regret does suck, but I'm also of the philosophy that crappy stuff happens to us so we can learn. Everytime I think about mistakes from my past and wish them away, I realize that if things hadn't happened that way, I wouldn't be where I am today. So, there's nothing I'd change about my life so far. Maybe I wish I'd tried to pursue Gemma the day I saw her, but I think I would have just scared her away. Things happen when they happen for a reason. I guess that's why I sometimes have issues with what Gemma and her family do.
What is the hardest and the best part about knowing Gemma?
The best part is getting to be with her. I know this sounds really cheesy, but she makes me feel alive. When I'm around her the world is just brighter and better. Being with her makes me happy. The hardest part is the whole secrecy thing and the travel thing can suck sometimes too. I worry about her. I wish I could take her out of this situation and protect her, but I know I can't.
What scares you the most?
That something will happen to Gemma when she's across the line. That she'll leave one day and never come back. What would I do? What could I do? In that sense I feel totally powerless and that's not a very nice feeling.
What makes you happiest?
Having one of those magic days where Gem doesn't travel and it's like we're these two, normal teenage kids who are carefree and in love and the future holds whatever we want it to. Those days are like gold.
Thanks for coming by to chat, hope to see you again!

Synopsis:Sometimes following your heart can end up destroying the ones you love.

When seventeen-year-old Eviana Dumahl is faced with the responsibility of an arranged marriage and clan leadership, she is forced to choose between the life required of a mermaid and one of a teenage girl simply infatuated with the wrong guy. Kain, her devoted fiancé would make a wonderful husband except that she’s been in love with Brendan, a shape-shifting selkie, ever since they were kids. Choosing to abandon her family, her clan, and her life with Kain will have dire consequences far beyond anything she could have imagined.

A war is brewing amongst the clans and Eviana unwittingly becomes a pawn in the intricate schemes of a twisted mastermind. With Brendan’s life on the line, she has no choice but to involve those who she once considered friends. Amidst encountering senseless tragedies and immense loss, Eviana discovers that she is more valuable as a clan leader than anyone ever suspected. Her survival is not only dependent upon the loyalty of her friends, but also on her acceptance of a life that she had so adamantly tried to escape.

Promises is the first book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends through the perils of growing up in a discrete world that inherently threatens human society.

Review: Evianna is a fantastic character, though she seemed a bit preoccupied with herself sometimes. It is action packed and loaded with twists and turns, as soon as it seems one thing is going to happen, something completely unexpected takes place. Kain, one of the male love interests is the most likeable of the two for me, because he is willing to sacrifice so much for her even though she doesn't love him. The other fella Brendan, just wasn't feeling him that much. Now, the reason is there is something up with this guy, he is mysterious and hiding something. Evianna, Brendan and Kain become apart of something bigger than they expected and Evianna realizes that the choices she makes will change everything she holds dear. The story was well written and I thought it was paced pretty steadily. I absolutely loved the syrenka/mermaid lore in this book. Good read, couldn't go to bed until I finished it.

About the Book
Collapse of the Veil is the first book of the Passage Through Time series.

Escaping her home routine for a few hours, 16-year-old Katie grabs her bike and leaves behind her cranky baby, hyperactive brother and struggling single mom. Flopping down in a field to rest, Katie brushes against an enchanted willow and falls into a dying world far in the future. The few survivors cling to their lore - tales of terrible destruction that are about to fall upon Katie's home.

Time travel, psychic phenomena and human emotion all play key roles in the juncture of these two vastly diverse societies. Katie must set aside the normal goals of a typical teenager and decide if she can be the one to help save her two worlds.

Review: This is an interesting story, my favorite character was the baby Tyler because of how the narrator voiced him. He is such a cute baby and I felt the narrator created a perfect picture of him. It took me a little longer to read/listen to this one as it was my first time listening to an audio on my kindle as I usually listen in the car but it worked out well. Though I like the audio and believe it translated well to audio, for me this would be one that I would have to read to follow what was going on, whenever I got interrupted or had to stop, the flow of the story was lost for me. However, this is just my personal preference for this particular title. The narrator did an excellent job of varying the voices from young to old, male to female, either through the tone of voice or inflection. She makes the story interesting and enjoyable to listen, as she has a pleasant voice. The pace was steady, though at times it was a bit slow. The only thing that was really a problem is when I had my headphones on the sound was perfect but when I took them out to use the speakers on my Kindle, it wasn't loud enough or when I plugged it up to my car the sound was too low, even with the volume up high. This also contributed to me taking longer to listen to this one because the majority of my audio listening is in the car, but alas overall I think this is an interesting story that was short but contained a good amount of story and the ending left me wanting to know what will happen next with Katie, Tyler and the people of the future, who seem to be living like they are in the stone ages. There is one scene where Katie, Tyler and her male friend get time zapped to the future and all the people are looking at the male like a breeding baby machine because they are unable to produce "living seed" and he is perfect to impregnate as many women to save them from extinction. All I could think was that poor boy, because I think they drugged him or something.I like the idea of this book, and it is a great listen about family, survival and self-worth.

Review: Dawn of Angels by Vivienne Malynn & Sean Kade

Title: The Dawn of Angels

Author: Vivienne Malynn & Sean Kade
Publisher: Sutherland Press
Publication:January 3, 2012
Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary: Left by her mother at a young age, Kyra has grown-up in the foster system, leaving her angry and hateful towards the world. The only person she can trust is Hammond, her case worker who has watched over her since the time her mother left. When Hammond places Kyra in a foster home located in a small town, strange things begin happening and Kyra starts unraveling the mystery of her past. When Kyra's life is threatened, she is saved by an angel, her guardian angel, Ashur, who falls from heaven to save her. Together, Ashur and Kyra must figure out why her life is in danger and stop a strange cult from bringing about the end of days.

Excerpt:
"I didn't just fall from heaven to save your life…" Ashur pulls me in closer until my chest touches his. "…I came here because after all those years, I could not spend another moment of eternity knowing that you would not be there."He begins to sweep his head down toward mine. I know what's coming and I can't allow it. Turning away, I say, "I can't." My objection is not that I don't love him, but that I can't love him. He is an angel, I am a mortal. Two worlds that never have, and never will exist together. "You know as well as I do that this can never be. No matter how desperately we may want it. What will become of us?""I don't know," he says. "I don't care.""Well, I do," I say. "All this will end and you will have to go back. And I will be left here alone.""But…""No," I say, sternly. "It's better this way."Our eyes meet and I look away, but his eyes do not retreat as if they are holding me in place, preventing me from leaving.

Review: Kyra's mother gave her up when she was younger and she has spent the majority of her life bitter, angry and fighting for her life. Now, her new foster parents stand between her and jail time, so she has to make it work this time. Try as she might trouble just seems to follow her everywhere but this time it is more sinister and dangerous than ever before, and Kyra left with only the necklace her mother gave her with someone's hair inside and the cryptic message to not trust anyone...must find a way to do just that. This story has loads going on, from angels to demons and some really weird clay creatures. Not one person is what they seem, especially Kyra as it all comes back to her and why does hell literally break loose when she settles into her new foster home. Her foster parents Justine and Jeff...well basically the whole town is strange, sort of cult like, and the fellas of interest Ethan is okay but Ashur is descriptively beautiful in every way. Lastly, the main character Kyra is mostly angry and distrustful of the very people that she should trust, and that comes from her insecurity and hurt from a mother she feels abandoned her, but will she ever see the truth that lies within her and learn to trust herself? I think this is an interesting story that has potential, and I look forward to seeing how things flesh out in the next book. Overall, it was an okay read.

Interview:Promises Author Amber Garr

LLM:What was your inspiration for this book?
AG:Aside from always wishing I could be a mermaid or invent gills for humans (), I actually wrote the first chapter as a short story. That’s how all of my books and stories seem to start…the first scene pops into my head and it takes off after that.
LLM: Was it difficult deciding how to bring the characters to life?
AG:Not really. I’d always heard people talk about how characters will scream at them and demand a spot on the page, and I really didn’t get it until I started writing a lot. I think the hardest part is to make sure that they are who I want them to be by the end of the book. To make sure they haven’t lost the characteristics that make them individuals and likeable.
LLM: Are there any similarities between you and your characters?
AG:I guess there are probably pieces of me and my experiences mixed in with them all. I remember being that age and struggling with decisions (big and small) that had the potential to hurt people and I hated being there. There are also some characters that have the personalities or physicality of people I’ve known.
LLM: Is there a specific message in your book that you hope readers will understand?
AG:I think it’s important to remember that my characters are young yet are faced with adult challenges and responsibilities. They don’t always make the right choice. But I think that’s part of what YA literature is about …living and learning and being a better person (or mermaid) for it on the other side.
LLM: If you could travel back in time where would you go and why?
AG:The Italian Renaissance. I love the music, art, dancing, and fashion from that time so much that I think I lived there once in another life.
LLM: If you could be a character in a book, which book and what character?
AG:I’m a sucker for immortality, so any really old vampire (or other immortal) would be my choice. There are a lot of those out there, but perhaps one of the characters from Richelle Mead’s Georgina Kincaid succubus series would work or even one of the old vampires from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. They’ve lived a long time and have seen a lot. I think that would be fascinating.
LLM:What's the best advice you've ever received?
AG:Don’t stress over the things you cannot change. It’s a great philosophy, but I still struggle with it!
LLM:What do you like to do in your spare time?
AG:Aside from writing when I’m done with the day job, I’m a dance instructor at a local studio and am involved with a statewide writer’s network. There’s always something going on, so on the days I need a break, I just read.
LLM: The day in the life of a writer, what's that like? Any other projects in the works?
AG:The first 8-10 hours of the day I’m at work writing scientific documents or discovering interesting things. When I get home, I try to block out enough time to write a whole chapter a night. I’m too anal retentive to stop in the middle! Now that I have a couple of books released, I also spend about an hour a day checking in on sites, stats, promoting, marketing…you name it. Right now, I am finishing up Arise, the last book of the mermaid series and I’m also editing my adult urban fantasy Touching Evil. I’ve started an adult dark fiction book that I hope to get back into this summer.
LLM:Favorite Quote?
AG: “Be obscure clearly.” - E.B. White
LLM: What is a question that you wish interviewers would ask, and the answer to that question?
AG:Hmmm…good question! (Can that be my answer? ) No, I would say that I get a lot of compliments on them but no one asks me who did the covers for The Syrenka Series. I worked with PhatPuppy Art (phatpuppyart.com) and have been thrilled to see the results each and every time. Her artwork is amazing and I wish that I could write a book for every piece she creates.
LLM: Choose only one. If you could choose between invisibility or the ability to fly, which would you choose?
AG: Definitely invisibility. I hate to fly!

Interview & Excerpt: The Day of First Sun Blog Tour with Author Sheryl Steines

Please enjoy this interview with Sheryl Steines, author of the urban fantasy novel, The Day of First Sun. Then read on to learn how you can win huge prizes as part of this blog tour, including $450 in Amazon gift cards, a Kindle Fire, and 5 autographed copies of the book.

If you could travel in a time machine, would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would go to the past, meet famous people, see history as it happened. I’d be afraid to go to the future. I’m not sure I really want to know when I die.
If you could jump into a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
This might be to expected, but I would love to live at Hogwarts, stroll through Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, play with all the magical stuff, and visit the Weasleys at their house. I saw the Harry Potter exhibit at the museum a few years ago, and it just seemed so fun.
If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Sandra Bullock. Since she became a movie star, people all over the place tell me I look like her. She’s also funny. I can only imagine how much more interesting and funny my life would be if she were the lead.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always knew I wanted to be a writer. There were times that I thought I wanted to be an interior decorator, but in the end, I was always much happier writing and creating.
Who are your favorite authors of all time?
I have two. The first would be Stephen King. I was always amazed by the detail and imagination he used in his books, especially the earliest books. I watched him on an interview many years ago and he was talking about the things he was afraid of, one of which was sleeping with his feet outside the covers at night. He would always cover his feet so that the monsters under the bed wouldn’t get him. I laughed so hard because I do the same thing. J.K. Rowling is also a favorite. Her life story and Harry Potter reminded me that I wanted to be a writer when I was seven. She reminded me of the genre that I loved. It got me thinking about what stories intrigued me. I watched her interview on Oprah and cried through the entire thing. It got me thinking of ways to take my personal experiences and hide them in the fantasy world.
What do you do in your free time?
I read, a lot. In the winter, I spend time at museums and go shopping. In the summer, I love to go to flea markets. You could never have too many fleas. I love to travel. I spend most of the summer driving my 1966 Mustang convertible.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I’m a huge fan of Ninja Warrior. Yeah, the Japanese obstacle course. On one side, it’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. On the other side of it, the obstacles are so challenging, and the participants are so revered for making it through each stage that it is a huge honor to win.
Favorite places to travel?
I love Europe, London being my favorite city. I’ve been to Scotland, France, Italy, Germany and Austria. The Austrian/German Alps are some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen.
Favorite way to spend a rainy day?
In front of the television watching my favorite movies. Who doesn’t love Ferris Buehler’s Day Off and Sixteen Candles.
If you could have a superpower, what would you choose?
Telekinesis! Then I could clean my house without actually having to do anything.

Sturtagaard chose not to speak, though it was he who had called for the meeting. They both checked their watches and realized they had been sitting across from him for ten minutes, watching him sniff the air. If he wanted to play this, they would play along at least for a little while longer, though both were tired of the leering. As the vampire sniffed again, Cham finally figured out why.

"You know, you called us. We really don't have anything to say to you, so if you're just playing games, we're happy to leave. I've got other, more important things to do than watch you sniff and leer," Cham finally said, and stood up.

Sturtagaard smiled as he watched Cham open the door because he much preferred dealing with Annie, but when she stood up, too, he realized he'd overplayed his hand.

"If I talk, my employer will have me staked. I'd like some assurance that you won't do the same," he said rather quickly, before they left.

They turned and looked at him, both rolling their eyes.

"I'll have you staked if you don't talk," replied Cham, as he stood by the door.

"You're out of options if you ever hope to get out of here again," Annie said calmly, focusing on his face.

Sturtagaard squirmed a little in his seat, as Annie's expression was somewhat disquieting and unemotional. He looked at Cham, whose face was expressionless, and then back to Annie, who hadn't moved a muscle. The vampire sighed.

"You heard right. I was hired to create a zombie army to overthrow the Wizard Council," Sturtagaard said. His voice remained steady and calm with resignation.

"Who wants to overthrow the Council?" asked Cham, his hand still clutching the door.

"My employer. I've told you, I don't know who he is. I always dealt with his associate. He'd show up, leave notes, or send others with messages. I've never contacted him." He looked from one to the other, but they both remained stony and detached. "Come on, now. I can't give you information I don't have." Sturtagaard was charming.

Annie rolled her eyes again. "You really don't have any idea who the employer is?" she asked with sarcasm.

"Really, I don't," he said.

"So you're building an army of the dead. How long did you have to get this done?" Annie took out her phone and pulled out her calendar.

"He wanted it ready for September first."

Annie looked up with a grimace, and Cham looked surprised. She didn't need to mark the date on her calendar or research its significance, though neither could figure out why a zombie army had to be created for that day, the Day of First Sun. It was a very powerful and ancient day for good magic.

"So, your employer wants an army of the dead on that day? Why?" Cham asked in a flat, emotionless voice.

"He's a black wizard. What do you think he wants? He wants to overthrow the Council, take over the world, practice magic in the open. You know, the typical magical fantasy." Sturtagaard grinned because he believed that would benefit the entire supernatural world.

"Wipe the smirk off your face, Sturtagaard. Having free reign won't be as good as you think, with all the angry mobs, torches, and stakes through the heart."

Annie smirked at Cham, who shook his head and laughed. He waited to compose himself before looking back at the vampire.
