I was born and raised in Alabama. I obtained my MLIS in 2009 and my Bachelors' in Journalism in 2004 from the University of Alabama. My career aspirations and interests are teen services, programming in public libraries, readers advisory, reference services, and community outreach.
I have extensive experience working in a variety of library settings and areas. As a graduate student I interned at the Library @ the Birmingham Botanical Gardens learning cataloging techniques, photographing rare books, repairing and cleaning maps for encapsulation. I also did a directed study at the Birmingham Black Radio Museum, preparing the collection for preservation. In my second semester I was awarded an assistantship in the Government Documents located at Gorgas Library at the University for a year, working on user tutorials and adding content to the libraries' website. These were very enjoyable experiences, and if you ever get the opportunity regardless if you already have library experience take the time to do an internship or volunteer at a library different from what you're accustomed to. Currently I work as a Reference Librarian at my local library part-time and as a late night supervisor at an academic library. I am also responsible for ordering Young Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction and Audio at my public library. My personal interests are writing, photography, music, dance, movies and reading.
I began this blog as an assignment for my Information Technologies class and decided to keep it going after taking a Young Adult services class, where we had to review books. And I've been reviewing every since then. I have always been an avid reader since childhood, and regardless of the constant change in the format of the book, that love will remain. Though there is nothing like the smell and touch of a book, I think the reading experience is more personal when you are able to physically hold a print copy.
