Audio Review: Stormbringers by Philippa Gregory

Author: Philippa Gregory
Narrator:  Nicola Barber
Title: Stormbringers
Series: Order of Darkness #2
Length: 8hrs, 34 mins
Publication: 2013
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Source: Audiobookjukebox

The second book in a YA quartet filled with intrigue, mystery, and romance, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory.

Italy, 1453. Luca and Isolde grow more and more attracted to each other as they continue their journey to unravel the mysteries throughout Christendom. But their travels are delayed by the uprising of an intense religious crusade that threatens the balance of the civilized world. Death lingers in the air as war ravages on, but this religious conflict is nothing compared to the arrival of an intense and deadly storm.

Caught in the midst of unimaginable chaos, Luca and Isolde must rely on one another in order to survive.

The second in Philippa Gregory’s four-book series delves further into a forbidden romance and an epic quest. And the tension builds as secrets about The Order of Darkness are finally revealed...

In this second book Luca, Isolde, Frieze and Ishraq find themselves in the midst of a big mess. A children's crusade comes to the town that they all staying and to discover if the leader is truly a prophet, Luca's instructed to do an inquiry. He of course becomes pulled in by the young man and wants to follow him as well. His words are so profound and there's truth to what he says, how else would the man know so much about the end of days. Luca never expected disaster to strike, for so many to be lost and Isolde once more must prove her innocence. What they don't realize that darkness lurks close...can they save one another before it's too late?

Luca and Isolde are obviously falling for one another, although there circumstances dictate this as completely improper because she's taken vows and he intends to soon. They are both naïve and really irritating in this book. Ishraq and Frieze, their companions, have more knowledge about the world than these two and are much more cautious in where they lay their trust. I actually like the interactions with them more in this book because the main characters were brats. Isolde becomes jealous of her friend, Ishraq because she thinks Luca wants her. Luca is very quick-tempered in this one and believes he is doing God's work but why the secrecy. He so believes in what he's doing that he easily misses signs that will make him wonder about this mysterious order and its leader. Overall, this wasn't my favorite book as the flow of the story didn't move well for me. However, the narrative of the audio by Barber is good. She does a great job of portraying the characters and giving them a unique sound. I would definitely listen to her read again because I love her voice.

Blitz:Dark Winter by John Hennessy

Dark Winter by John Hennessy
Expected Pub: October 9, 2013

Romilly Winter is no ordinary heroine, just a reluctant one. She has a gift. She can see the future. But can she see far enough? The world in which she lives is under attack – the dead are rising, and evil follows her at every turn.

Will she be able to save herself – and the world?
From the Diary of Romilly Winter, October 14th.

"I’ve had two years to prepare for this. In that time, I have never told a soul. Of course, my Nan knew. She’d bequeathed me the mirror, after all.

Now, maybe tonight, tomorrow, in a few days, the event that I don’t want to happen with all my heart, will come to pass. I’m not ready. I know I’m not ready, and yet, it will happen nonetheless.

Nan had this thing in her possession for nearly seventy years. She had told me I simply had to be at Rosewinter, prior to my sixteenth birthday no matter what objections my parents raised. She said I was ‘special’, and was the only one equipped to deal with what was coming.

The problem is, I don’t feel special, I just feel…different, and in all probability, that isn't going to be good enough.

In just two days time, I will be sixteen years old, and if anything my Nan said is remotely true, I will be lucky to survive that long…"

Blitz: Impossibly Love by Shane Morgan

All Moya Douglas wants to do is study hard, maintain her scholarship, and make her mother proud while attending college. She doesn't have time for a boyfriend or going on dates arranged by her best friend. Moya doesn't believe in love. And she has no intention of ever finding it.

Branden McCarthy is determined to change her views.A selfless romantic who's had his heart broken in the past, Branden is fascinated with Moya's personality and hopes to develop something real with her—a connection so strong it'll open her heart. But just when things start to work between the two, Branden’s secret threatens to get in the way.

Will Moya finally do the impossible and give love a chance with Branden, or will fear keep them apart?

Excerpt from Impossibly Love
The first kiss – Branden’s POV

Moya’s eyes widened when I spun her around to face me. It was obvious what I was about to do and I knew very well she wouldn’t let it happen without a fight. Her attempts at being freed were futile as my hold increased the more she squirmed in my arms.
“Let go!” she demanded.
I blew hard, eager to drown myself in the sweetness of her lips. Dismissing her protest—and the little voice at the back of my head telling me not to—I shoved my mouth to hers and kissed her hungrily.
Moya lifted her hands to my chest and pushed tentatively, and just as fast they began to lower. I knew she couldn’t resist the deep passion evoking between us. Finally, she yielded, and I wrapped my arms even tighter around her as Moya parted her lips and allowed me to enter.
We groaned as our tongues collided, touching each other wildly as if the kiss was not only our first but our last. Moya placed her hands on my lower back, touching me sensually with her fingertips as she worked her way up my spine. She caressed the back of my neck, and then combed her fingers seductively through my hair.
By the time the kiss ended, we were both panting, trying to breathe steadily.
Moya wobbled as she backed away. “I have to get to class,” she whispered shakily as if under a trance.
I released her with regret and watched as Moya turned and started up the path, staggering along the way.
Afterwards, I dragged my thumb lightly along my lips, eyes fastened on Moya as she walked away. I could still feel the heat of her skin on mine, giving light to a fire of pleasure that threatened to make my hands shake in memory of her taste.
Motivated by the promise of her presence, I walked up the path as well, following behind the girl I was indisputably falling hard for and fast.

Giveaway & Promo:Now or Never by Jamie Canosa

Blurb:
To move on,
Leave the past behind,
And build a new life with Jay.

That’s all Em wanted. After everything they’d been through together, they were both overdue their ‘happily ever after’. Too bad the world doesn’t work that way. Memories last longer than dreams and Em’s fears continue to plague her both day and night, interfering with that new life she so desperately craves.

To start over,
Secure a future,
And give Em the life she deserves.

That was Jay’s plan, but the past isn’t done with them, yet. While Em still struggles to overcome the ghosts of her past, Jay is forced to come face to face with his. When the skeletons in his closet step back into the light, Jay must decide what he will do—and what he will sacrifice—to protect Em from them.

Against all odds, Em and Jay are on the verge of having everything they’ve ever wanted. They’ve fought for it before, but is their love strong enough to endure any more heartache? The time has come for each of them to choose for themselves whether or not they will allow the past to continue to corrupt their future. And, together, they must decide, will it be . . . NOW OR NEVER?
Excerpt from Now or Never

"Em jerked awake, scanning the darkened room. She was safe. She was in her home. In her bed. Not out there on the streets. Not back with him. She was safe. A deep breath started to bring her racing pulse back under control.

“Em . . . No . . . Em . . .”Jay’s haunted mumblings had her brain clawing its way out of the muddled fuzziness of waking so abruptly.

“Jay?”

The pain in his face eased at the sound of her voice and he rolled toward it, eyes still shut tight.

“No. Em. Em.” His head rocked on the pillow and Em’s heart clenched painfully.

Another nightmare. He didn’t have them often—or at least he hid them well from her—but when he did, it hurt her to see him in that kind of pain even if it wasn’t real.

“Jay, baby, wake up. It’s me. It’s Em. Wake up, baby.”

He groaned and shook his head. The nightmare wasn’t letting him go.

“Jay!” This time she shook him gently. “Jay!”

Jay shot straight up in the bed, gasping for breath and scanning the room much like she had just done. She knew too well what that split second felt like. That moment each and every time you woke up and didn’t know where you were, still thought you were in danger, before reality settled in.

“It’s okay.” Em wrapped her arms around Jay from behind and laid her head on his heaving back. His heart beat frantically beneath her cheek. “It’ okay. I’m here.”

-Jamie

She felt him swallow and then his whole body tensed for a moment before he shifted in her arms so that he was facing her, and pulled her into him. Pressed against his chest almost too tight to breath, she could feel his body slowly relaxing. His muscles eased, his grip loosened. Still, he shook.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He whispered the words into her hair.

Not knowing what he was apologizing for, Em decided it was probably best to simply accept it. “It’s okay. Everything’s all right now.” And, unlike many of the times they’d said those words to one another in the past, this time they were true.

Things weren’t perfect. The third dinner of Ramen noodles that week sitting like a cold lump in her stomach could attest to that, but it was food. They had a solid roof over their heads, a warm, safe place to sleep, and above all, they had each other. Em would never dream to ask for anything more."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Marlene Sanchez was born in New York and raised in Miami. Her family and friends are an important part of her life, a constant inspiration, and keep her motivated to succeed in pursuing her dream. She has had a passion for writing since her ninth grade English teacher put it all into perspective for her. “Write how you speak and write what you know.” She credits her teacher every chance she gets for giving her a love of writing!

Marlene writes mystery/suspense with a sprinkle of romance. Her love of crime and legal dramas, and of course The Godfather, has opened her eyes to the wonderful world of mystery/suspense. The action and thrill is what keeps her fingers gliding across the keyboard, as her brain explodes with ideas about the next unfortunate victim.

She is a strong, independent woman because her Cuban mother raised her right. Her main characters embrace that same attitude; strong Cuban American women that take no “caca” from anyone.

Marlene has a couple of books under her belt, with several in the works to release in 2014. She hopes to someday be a household name, at least in her own home if nowhere else. She just wants her sons to be proud of her, that’s reward enough… Yeah right, she wants the fame and fortune too.Website | Facebook | Twitter | GoodReads

Strong characters with a believable conflict that keeps them apart until they emotionally grow and develop to a sigh-worthy resolution.

She has been the primary care giver for her mom the last few years, her boyfriend committed suicide after she dumped him eight months ago and when she moves to NYC for a new start, a whole bunch of trouble follows. She has no idea whether her high priestess Wiccan aunt is messing with her, or her hot new muso boyfriend, but someone is out to get her. Crossroads Blog Tour Day 7: Author Judith Graves

Judith Graves reads as much as she writes, devouring at least two books a week. She loves heated debates over character motives...she's been kicked out of several book clubs for just this reason. With her faithful sidekick at her feet--Willow, a yellow lab--Judith remains unfazed by book club drama and is furiously writing more paranormal stories.
Working in a school library, Judith is surrounded by children's and young adult literature (there's no escape!). A singer/songwriter for more than 10 years, she often writes songs about her characters--since they are beasties of the night, this makes for interesting listening.

A firm believer that Canadian teen fiction can be sexy, action-packed and snarky as hell, Judith writes paranormal stories with attitude.

Residing in a northern Alberta community similar to the fictional town of Redgrave, where Under My Skin is set, Judith unhappily endures snow in the winter and runs away from bees in the summer.

Being that it’s Halloween time and we know things go bump in the night…What’s the scariest thing that has happened to you?

When I was a kid, we lived on a military base that bordered both the city and an expanse of farmland. We’d often venture out on that land and explore the little ponds and patches of trees left standing. And always. Always. We’d end up at the house.

A creepy, abandoned house hidden deep within the shrubs and poplars. Typical farmhouse, I guess. Two story. Porch. Nothing fancy – just bare bones. Most of the windows were covered with weathered plywood held in place with rusted nails. Half of the concrete steps leading to the front door had crumbled to dust.

People told lots of stories about what happened in that place. They’re been a fire. People were murdered. A suicide pact. But no one knew for sure.

Only that the house had a weird sort of energy. Like it knew when someone was close by. Like it wanted you to come and stay a spell. To rest. To give in.

We never took the house up on its offer, although through holes in one side window, you could tell others had. Older kids. Braver kids. Stupider kids. We’d peer in and see the red graffiti on the walls. The moss-covered mattress on the wooden floor. The beer cans and fast food wrappers.

But like I said, we never went inside.

Then, one day, they tore the trees down. And the house. Developers, as usual. My friends turned back, disappointed, but I lingered. Staring at the fallen trees, the empty patch of black earth where the house had stood.

And I swear I could still see it. There. Waiting for me to come inside. I ran to my friends and never looked back. Scariest moment ever. Because I had really, really want to step inside. Into a house that wasn’t there.

And I knew I’d never come back out.

What future projects can we hope to see from you next?

I’m thrilled to say that I have a title coming out at the end of October, KILLER’S INSTINCT, co-written with Dawn Dalton. We’re keen to unleash our monster-hunter tale on the world. Here’s the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUK-AsvPv6o

Crossroads Blog Tour Day 7: Author Jackie Morse Kessler

Who designed the covers for the Riders of the Apocalypse?
JMK: The incredible Sammy Yuen designed all four covers in the Riders of the Apocalypse series. I wish I could say I had something to do with it, but all I did was say “THANK YOU!!!”

What inspired you to write about the four horsemen and tie them in with serious conditions that we deal with today?

JMK: I had the idea for HUNGER (the first book in the Riders of the Apocalypse series) for 10 years before I finally sat down to write it. I used to be bulimic, and I still have body image issues. It was my agent who finally convinced me to write the book, after I told her I had an idea about an anorexic teenage girl who becomes the new Famine, one of the Four Horsemen, and the book itself would take a hard-hitting look at eating disorders. I’m not sure I ever would have written it if not for her! (Thanks, Miriam!!!) If HUNGER gets people talking about what eating disorders are, and what they’re not, then I’m very happy.   I’m not the first person to have an anorexic character become Famine—that was in the comic book X-Factor back in the 1980s—but I do feel I’ve put my own unique spin on it.

Once HUNGER sold, my agent asked me “Which Horseman will you write about next?” And I was like, “NEXT???” So that’s when I came up with the concept for RAGE (a teenage girl who self-injures by cutting herself is given the Sword of War).

LOSS takes a different tack—though it deals with coping when a loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s, at its core the book is about bullying. The story looks at a bullied teenage boy who is tricked into becoming Pestilence. If there’s a message there, it’s bullying is a disease, and it can be cured. 

And then there’s BREATH. That one had to do three things: Tell the origin story of Death; tell the story of the teen protagonist, Xander; and answer all the big questions in the series. The book looks at depression and suicidal thoughts. But there’s also a talking horse, so it’s not all doom and gloom. 

Crossroads Blog Tour Day 6: Author Patrice Lyle

Patrice Lyle believes in writing what you love. Since the age of ten, she’s been doing just that. Her father’s policeman tales sparked her love of mysteries. Stories of her great grandmother’s ESP sparked her love of the paranormal. And a trip to a drug store in England, where she bought a homeopathic remedy for a sore throat, sparked her love of natural health. She has a BA in Business, an MA in Writing Popular Fiction, and PhD in Holistic Nutrition; and she’s a Certified Traditional Naturopath. Now she lives with her husband and three cats near Memphis, where she’s working on her next novel and trolling the area for ghostly happenings.
What do you love most about your character Morgan in Lethally Blonde?
I love how fun Morgan is. She’s a fashion loving demon chick who loves pink and makeup plus she knows how to use a compact mirror to kill an evil demon. Morgan is certainly not the most popular demon at Pitchfork Prep, but as Kirkus Reviews said in their 2012 review, “…Morgan is so appealing that readers can’t stop turning pages to find out what she’ll do next. Like cotton candy, this is fun even if it isn’t filling.” I absolutely loved writing Morgan’s character because she’s so much fun, but don’t be fooled… she’s lethal and her mission is critical!

If you want to learn more about Morgan, see the “fun facts about Morgan Skully” on my website at: http://patricebooks.com/meet-morgan.html.

Best Halloween memory?
My favorite Halloween was in 1977, the year the original Star Wars came out. I was six year old and Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre. I’ll never forget the moment when Luke Skywalker rescued Princess Leia from the Storm Troopers by swinging on the rope. That was the most awesome thing I’d ever seen and, of course, I wanted to be Princess Leia for Halloween. So my mom made me a white dress and my hair in two side buns. I loved my outfit and felt totally cool!
